What golden hour actually is

Why photographers chase it

Three reasons golden hour produces flattering images:

1. Soft, directional light. When the sun is high, shadows are short and harsh; eyes are dark, noses cast unflattering shadows down the face. When the sun is low, shadows are long, soft, and at face level — they sculpt features rather than cutting them.

2. Warm color cast. Skin looks healthier under warm light. Architectural materials (brick, wood, stone) look richer. Most cameras have a "golden hour mode" or warm white-balance preset that emphasizes this effect.

3. Backlight and rim light. When the sun is behind your subject, it creates a glowing edge around them. Hair turns into a halo. Translucent fabrics light up. This is hard to fake with artificial lights and trivial during golden hour.

Is morning or evening golden hour better?
