The world's most unusual time zones (and why they exist)
Most countries use whole-hour UTC offsets. A handful use half-hour offsets. A very small handful use 45-minute offsets. And one place uses half-hour daylight saving time. The world's most unusual time zones are unusual on purpose — each has a story.

Nepal — UTC+5:45
The most fractional of all major time zones. Nepal is 5 hours and 45 minutes ahead of UTC, which means 15 minutes ahead of India and 45 minutes ahead of Pakistan.
The story: Nepal originally used UTC+5:30 (same as India) until 1986. The shift to UTC+5:45 was a deliberate political differentiation — Nepal wanted to assert independence from Indian time-keeping. The 15-minute shift also aligns more closely with the longitude of Mount Everest (specifically the longitude of Gauri Shankar, a peak considered Nepal's reference).
The 45-minute offset means that converting between Nepal and almost any other country requires careful arithmetic. Most software handles it; humans usually don't.
Chatham Islands, New Zealand — UTC+12:45
A small archipelago of fewer than 1,000 people, 800 km east of New Zealand. Their time zone is UTC+12:45 — meaning 45 minutes ahead of New Zealand mainland time (UTC+12), and the only inhabited place in the world at this offset.
Why? Geographic accuracy. The islands are about 11° east of mainland NZ; at 15° per hour, that's roughly 44 minutes. The 45-minute offset puts the local clock genuinely close to local solar time.
Chatham observes daylight saving time too — UTC+13:45 in summer. Together with Lord Howe Island (next), it's one of only two places in the world where DST shifts at fractional offsets.
Lord Howe Island, Australia — UTC+10:30 / +11
A tiny island (~360 residents) east of mainland Australia. Lord Howe is famous for being the only place in the world where DST shifts the clock by 30 minutes instead of 60.
In Australian winter, Lord Howe is UTC+10:30. In summer, it's UTC+11. The DST jump is half an hour, not a full hour.
The reasoning: residents wanted to extend evening daylight in summer (typical DST motivation) but didn't want a full hour shift because it would feel jarring at such a small offset. The compromise: 30-minute DST. The IANA database supports it; most software handles it correctly. Tourists visiting from mainland Australia routinely get confused.
Newfoundland, Canada — UTC-3:30 / -2:30
Half-hour offset from the rest of Atlantic Canada. Newfoundland is UTC-3:30 in winter and UTC-2:30 in summer with DST.
The history: when Canada standardized time zones, Newfoundland insisted on its own offset because the province's geographic position (significantly east of mainland Atlantic Canada) genuinely warranted a different time. The 30-minute compromise was acceptable to local government.
It's the only Canadian province with a non-whole-hour offset. Air Canada and other carriers handle it routinely; tourists sometimes don't notice their flight schedule shifts in unexpected ways.
Eucla, Western Australia — UTC+8:45 (unofficial)
An unofficial offset used by a small community (~50 residents) in southwestern Australia. Eucla sits between Western Australia (UTC+8) and South Australia (UTC+9:30 in winter). The local convention is UTC+8:45 — splitting the difference.
This isn't a legal time zone. It's a local convention, used by Eucla businesses and residents because the geographic logic makes more sense than either neighbor's official time. Outside Eucla, nobody recognizes UTC+8:45.
Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia — UTC-9:30
A group of islands in the South Pacific. Their time zone is UTC-9:30, halfway between French Polynesia's mainland (Tahiti at UTC-10) and Hawaii (UTC-10).
The 30-minute offset reflects the islands' geographic position. About 2,000 km northeast of Tahiti, far enough that local solar time is genuinely shifted from Tahiti.
North Korea's brief UTC+8:30
For about 3 years (2015–2018), North Korea used UTC+8:30 — half an hour behind South Korea. The shift was politically symbolic: Kim Jong-un announced the change to "remove the legacy of Japanese colonial time" (Japan had imposed UTC+9 on Korea during the colonial period 1910–1945).
In 2018, after improving inter-Korean relations, North Korea re-aligned to UTC+9 to match South Korea — explicitly described as a gesture of unity. The whole episode lasted about 3 years and is mostly remembered as a curiosity.
Iran — UTC+3:30 (DST abolished 2022)
Iran is at UTC+3:30 with no DST since 2022. Before 2022, Iran observed DST and shifted to UTC+4:30 in summer. The decision to abolish DST came after years of debate; the current 3:30 offset reflects Iran's geographic center (longitude ~52°E, which by the 15°/hour rule would be about UTC+3.5).
Iran is one of only two large countries (with Afghanistan) using a 30-minute offset for its entire territory.
Why fractional offsets exist
The pattern is consistent: each fractional offset reflects either a geographic compromise (the location's longitude doesn't line up neatly with whole-hour boundaries) or a political differentiation (asserting independence from a neighbor's time).
Whole-hour offsets are simpler for international coordination, but the fractional ones persist because changing them would create more disruption than the inconvenience of being non-standard.
When unusual zones cause problems
Software that hard-codes whole-hour offsets breaks for these zones. Common bugs:
- Calendar apps showing wrong times for India (UTC+5:30) by treating it as UTC+5
- Cron jobs scheduled for "every hour" missing the 30-minute and 45-minute marks
- Travel websites showing flight arrivals in the wrong fractional offset
Modern software using the IANA database handles all of these correctly. Older or hand-rolled time-zone code often doesn't.
FAQ
Why isn't there a UTC+13:45?
Because no inhabited place is at that offset. Chatham Islands at UTC+12:45 is currently the easternmost fractional zone. UTC+13 is occupied by Tonga and Samoa.
Are there any UTC+5:15 or UTC+5:45 zones?
UTC+5:45 is Nepal. UTC+5:15 doesn't exist as a current offset. Sometime in the 1800s, parts of British India used UTC+5:53:20 (Calcutta time), but that's gone.
Does software always handle fractional offsets correctly?
Modern libraries (Python's zoneinfo, JavaScript's Intl.DateTimeFormat, Java's java.time) handle them correctly. Older or hand-rolled code may not. The fix is to use a tz-database-aware library and avoid hardcoding offsets.
Does any place use UTC+0:30 or UTC-0:30?
No current places. Some historical records show fractional offsets near UTC+0 from before standardization (1880s-1900s) but none persist today.
Why doesn't China use multiple time zones to match its longitude span?
A 1949 political decision. Mao's government unified China onto Beijing time as a symbol of national integration. The result is that the sun rises at 10 AM in western Xinjiang in winter — geographically extreme, but politically stable.
What's the most "remote" time zone — the one with the fewest people?
Probably UTC-12 (Baker and Howland Islands, both uninhabited atolls). The least-populated inhabited zone is probably UTC-9:30 (Marquesas, ~9,000 residents) or UTC+8:45 (Eucla, ~50 residents).
