Two Islamic apps in the same city can show prayer times that differ by 10-20 minutes. Two mosques in the same neighborhood can announce slightly different schedules. The differences aren't bugs — they reflect different traditional methods of calculating when each prayer's window begins.

Asr juristic methods

The biggest visible difference is often Asr time:

Standard (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali): Asr begins when an upright object's shadow equals its own height (plus the noon shadow). Asr is earlier in the day.

Hanafi: Asr begins when an upright object's shadow equals twice its own height (plus the noon shadow). Asr is later in the day, sometimes by 30-90 minutes.

A Hanafi mosque and a Shafi'i mosque in the same city will have noticeably different Asr times. This is the single most common reason for "the prayer times don't match."

Other contributing factors

Geographic precision. A mosque using a city-center reference point and an app using GPS coordinates 5 km away can have a 30-second difference. Usually too small to notice.

Sunrise/sunset definition. "Sunrise" can mean center of sun crossing horizon, top edge of sun appearing, or first photons reaching observer. Differences are 1-3 minutes.

Refraction adjustments. Atmospheric refraction bends light at low angles. Different methods apply slightly different corrections.

Iqamah delay. The mosque-published time for the actual prayer (iqamah) is usually 10-20 minutes after the calculated start time, allowing for community gathering. Apps usually show the calculated start; mosques show iqamah.

How to align with your mosque

If you want to match your local mosque exactly:

1. Find out which method your mosque uses. Ask the imam, check the mosque's website, or look at posted prayer times for clues.

- Egyptian if you're in Egypt or prefer the older standard
- Umm al-Qura for Saudi Arabia or Hijaz region

Common confusions

"My phone is wrong." Usually it's not — it's just using a different method than your mosque. Switch the app's method to match.

"Two apps disagree." Different default methods. Check each app's settings.

"The mosque time doesn't match what I expected." Some mosques delay iqamah significantly; some announce only iqamah, not the calculated start. Apps show the calculated start.

"Asr time is way off." Almost certainly Hanafi vs Standard. Check.

"Isha is much later than my friend's app." Could be an angle difference, or the Umm al-Qura "fixed offset after Maghrib" approach.

High-latitude special cases

Above ~48°N latitude in summer, the sun doesn't drop 18° (or 17.5°, etc.) below the horizon. Strict Fajr/Isha calculations "don't happen." Methods address this with various rulings:

- Last reliable city: use the times from a city where calculation works
- Mecca times: use the times of Mecca on the same date
- 1/7 night fraction: calculate Isha as 1/7 of the night length from Maghrib
- Closest natural angle: use whatever angle the sun does reach

FAQ

Why doesn't everyone just use one method?

Each method represents a centuries-old fiqh tradition. Switching requires changing the practice of millions of people, with no clear "right" answer. Coexistence is the practical solution.

Are the differences theologically significant?

For most Muslims, no. All recognized methods are considered valid within Islamic jurisprudence. Choosing a method is a matter of community preference, not doctrinal correctness.

Why do some apps show 6 different methods?

Because users come from different traditions. Apps designed for international audiences support multiple methods so each user can pick the one matching their tradition.

What if I'm traveling to a country that uses a different method?

Local convention usually wins. If you're in Saudi Arabia for Hajj, follow Umm al-Qura. If you're in Egypt during Ramadan, follow Egyptian. Returning home, switch back.

Should I memorize the calculations?

You don't need to. Apps handle them. Just pick the right method for your community.

Does the same method give the same time everywhere?

Yes — the method is geographic-position-aware. MWL applied to Mumbai gives Mumbai's Fajr; MWL applied to London gives London's Fajr. Same method, different positions, different times.
