Most of the time, "how old are you?" expects an integer in years. But there are situations — pregnancy tracking, medication dosing, fitness apps, life-milestone reflection, sometimes legal contexts — where you want age in days or even hours. The math is straightforward but has a few quirks worth knowing.

## Years vs days vs hours
Take a person born on May 10, 2000, computing their age on May 10, 2026:
- **Age in years**: 26 years (counting completed birthdays)
- **Age in days**: 9,497 days
- **Age in hours**: about 227,930 hours
- **Age in minutes**: about 13,675,800 minutes
- **Age in seconds**: about 820,548,000 seconds
The "in years" answer hides leap years, time zones, and birth-time. The "in seconds" answer is the most precise, but feels surreal — most people don't think of themselves as 800-million-second-old.
If your birthday hasn't happened yet this year, your age in years is one less than the year subtraction would suggest. Born May 21, 2000, asked on May 10, 2026: you're 25, not 26. The calculator handles this automatically.
## Leap years and February 29 birthdays
If you were born on February 29 (leap day), you have an actual birthday only every four years. Most calendar systems and legal jurisdictions treat your "birthday" in non-leap years as either March 1 or February 28, depending on the rule.
In Sweden and other places that use the rule "the day after February 28," a leap-day baby's first non-leap birthday is March 1. In Hong Kong and several other systems, the rule is February 28. In the US, most state laws default to March 1 for legal purposes (turning 21, etc.), but individual states vary.
If you were born on Feb 29, 2000, you've had only 6 actual leap-day birthdays as of 2026: 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024. So you can call yourself 6 if you want to. People will not accept this argument.
For day-counting purposes, leap days are real days. A person born February 28, 2000 was 1 day old on March 1, 2000 (which existed normally, not a leap day). A person born February 29, 2000 was 1 day old on March 1, 2000 (because Feb 29 is a real day in 2000). A person born February 28, 2001 was 365 days old on February 28, 2002 (no leap day).
## Time zones and birth time
For most purposes, age is computed in the time zone where you were born. But there's an edge case: if you were born at 11 PM on May 10 in Tokyo, your "birthday" in California (8 hours behind) was technically May 10 at 7 AM. Are you born May 10 or May 9?
The convention almost everyone uses: your birthdate is the calendar date in the place where you were born. So a person born at 11 PM Tokyo on May 10 is born on May 10, period. Their age increases by one year on each May 10 in the local time of wherever they currently are.
This matters mostly for pregnancy due-date math (which uses the mother's local time and gets complicated for international travel), legal age cutoffs (which depend on the jurisdiction's local time), and sports/competition age cutoffs (where the registering organization picks the rule).
## How exact age is computed
The technical formula:
1. Take birthdate B and target date T (both in the same time zone, usually local time of where the person was born or where they are).
2. Compute the calendar year difference: `years = T.year - B.year`.
3. If T is before the month/day of B in T's year, subtract 1: `if (T.month, T.day) < (B.month, B.day): years -= 1`.
4. For days/hours/minutes/seconds, just take the timestamp difference and convert.

## Why age can feel different from the number
A few oddities:
**Pregnancy and developmental age.** A baby born 4 weeks premature is 4 weeks "younger" than their gestational age would suggest. Doctors use both: chronological age (since birth) and adjusted age (since the original due date). Adjusted age is used until about 24 months for developmental milestones.
**Korean age.** Traditional Korean age counted everyone as 1 at birth, and added a year on January 1, not on the birthday. So a baby born December 31 would be 2 years old on January 1. This system was officially abolished in 2023; Korea now uses international age. But you'll still encounter Korean age in older documents.
**Chinese age.** Similar to traditional Korean — counted from conception (so 1 at birth) and added a year on Lunar New Year. Mostly historical now, but persists in some traditional contexts.
**Astronomical age.** Some birth-chart and astrology contexts use "completed solar returns" — number of times the sun has returned to the position it was in at your birth. This is essentially identical to age-in-years for everyone alive on Earth.

Medication dosing and pregnancy/postpartum tracking often use age-in-days because they're more precise than age-in-years for young children.
- Newborn (0–28 days): pediatricians use exact days
- Infant (1 month – 1 year): days or weeks
- Toddler (1–3 years): months
- Preschool+ : years (sometimes with months for under-5s)
For fitness apps and activity tracking, age-in-years is fine. For pregnancy, "weeks since LMP" (last menstrual period) is the standard and is independent of birthdate.

## FAQ
### Why is my age different in different time zones?
Technically it shouldn't be — your age is anchored to your birthdate, not to the current observer's clock. If you were born in Tokyo at midnight on May 10, you are 26 on May 10 at midnight Tokyo time, regardless of where the person asking is. Some pedantic edge cases exist (am I 26 yet at 6 PM in California on May 9, when in Tokyo it's already May 10?), but those don't usually matter in practice. Pick a convention and stick with it.
