The five daily prayers — salah — are one of the five pillars of Islam, observed by roughly 1.8 billion people. Each prayer has a name, a window of permissible time, and a position in the day tied to the sun. They shift every day, every season, and every city. The five prayers, in order

Three of these — Fajr, Maghrib, Isha — depend on twilight. Two — Dhuhr, Asr — depend on the position of the sun and the length of shadows. None of them are tied to a clock.

Fajr — the dawn prayer

Fajr is observed in the window between true dawn and sunrise. True dawn (in Arabic, al-fajr al-sadiq) is the moment when the first horizontal light appears on the eastern horizon — distinct from "false dawn," a brief vertical pre-glow that fades before true dawn begins.

The Qur'an refers to true dawn in the verse "until the white thread of dawn appears distinct from the black thread of night." Because true dawn happens about an hour to 90 minutes before the sun actually rises, Fajr is genuinely the pre-dawn prayer — performed in darkness most of the year.

In modern timetables, Fajr's start is calculated as the moment when the sun is a specific number of degrees below the horizon. The exact angle varies by school of thought: 15° in the Muslim World League standard, 18° in the ISNA (Islamic Society of North America) standard, 19° in the Egyptian General Authority standard. That's why the same city can have Fajr times differing by 10–15 minutes between two methods.

If you live at very high latitudes (above ~48°N or below 48°S), Fajr can become problematic in summer because true dawn never happens — the sun just dips and rises again. There are several rulings for this case; the Islamic prayer time page handles them automatically based on your city.

Dhuhr — the midday prayer

Dhuhr begins immediately after the sun crosses the meridian (the local solar noon — when the sun is at its highest point in the sky). It ends when the shadow of an upright object equals its own height (in the majority opinion) or just before sunset.

Solar noon is not clock noon. Clock noon is 12:00 on your wall clock, which is a function of your time zone and how far east or west you are within that zone. Solar noon shifts throughout the year by the equation of time — sometimes solar noon is at 12:14 wall-clock, sometimes at 11:48. Dhuhr times reflect this.

In most calculation methods, Dhuhr is set to a few minutes after solar noon to ensure the sun has actually crossed the meridian.

Asr — the afternoon prayer

Asr begins at the end of Dhuhr (when the shadow of an object equals its own height) and ends at sunset.

There are two main opinions on when exactly Asr begins:

- Shafi/Maliki/Hanbali (majority). Asr begins when an object's shadow equals its own height plus the shadow at noon.
- Hanafi. Asr begins when an object's shadow equals twice its own height plus the shadow at noon.

The Hanafi opinion delays Asr by 30–90 minutes depending on season and latitude. This is why two Muslims at the same mosque might have different Asr times on their phones — one's app is set to Shafi/Maliki/Hanbali, the other to Hanafi. Maghrib — the sunset prayer

Maghrib begins at sunset and ends at the disappearance of the red twilight on the western horizon.

This is the one prayer with a relatively short window — typically 30–90 minutes depending on latitude and season. It's the only prayer that's tied to a single observable astronomical event (sunset itself) rather than a sun-angle calculation. Most calculation methods agree on Maghrib to within a minute or two.

Isha — the night prayer

Isha begins after the disappearance of the red twilight (the end of Maghrib's window) and lasts until pre-dawn (or until midnight in some opinions).

Like Fajr, Isha is calculated using a sun-angle below the horizon — typically 15° to 18° depending on the school. Like Fajr, it has high-latitude problems: in summer near the Arctic Circle, Isha doesn't naturally end before Fajr starts. The fiqh response is similar — usually using the times of the closest "normal" city or fixed times based on Mecca.

Why prayer times differ between two apps

Three things vary:

1. Calculation method. Muslim World League (MWL), ISNA, Egyptian, Karachi, Umm Al-Qura, Tehran, and several others. They differ in the exact sun angle used for Fajr and Isha. The Karachi method uses 18°/18°, the MWL uses 18°/17°, ISNA uses 15°/15°, etc.

2. Asr method. Standard (majority of schools) vs Hanafi. This affects only the Asr time, by 30–90 minutes.

3. High-latitude rule. What to do when the sun's angle never drops below 18°. Options include using the latest valid time, using Mecca times, using a 1/7 night fraction, or holding the prayer at the angle method's calculated time even if it's only theoretical.

If two people in the same city have different prayer times, one of these three is the cause. The prayer time page defaults to MWL but lets you switch methods to match your local tradition or your mosque's posted times.

Within each prayer's window, certain times are considered preferable:

- Fajr is preferably prayed before the start of nautical twilight, while it's still genuinely dark
- Dhuhr is preferably prayed in the early part of its window in summer, slightly later in winter
- Asr is preferably prayed early — roughly the midpoint of its window
- Maghrib is preferably prayed immediately after sunset, with no significant delay
- Isha is preferably prayed in the first third of the night, though praying it later is permitted

Most mosques announce the adhan (call to prayer) at the start of each window and the iqamah (final call) about 15 minutes later, with the actual congregational prayer following.

Calculating prayer times yourself

You don't need to. Every prayer time app and website does this for you. But if you want to understand the math:

1. Get the sun's altitude (angular height above horizon) for your latitude/longitude at any moment in the day. This is standard astronomy — calculated from solar declination, hour angle, and your latitude.
2. Sunrise/sunset = the moment the sun's center is at altitude -0.833° (accounting for refraction and the sun's apparent radius).
3. Solar noon = the moment the sun is at maximum altitude.
4. Fajr = the moment before sunrise when the sun is at -X° (where X is your method's angle, e.g., 15° or 18°).
5. Isha = the moment after sunset when the sun is at -Y° (similarly method-dependent).
6. Dhuhr = solar noon + a few minutes' margin.
7. Asr = the moment when the shadow of an upright object equals its own height (or twice, for Hanafi).
8. Maghrib = sunset.

The math is well-understood and the libraries that implement it (PrayTimes.js, the npm package `salah`, Python `pyislam`, etc.) all give nearly identical answers when set to the same method.

FAQ

What if I miss a prayer?

The standard answer is to pray it as soon as you remember (called qada). The intention is to make up missed prayers; in some opinions, you should pray missed prayers in order before the current one. Most modern fiqh allows praying the current prayer first if the missed prayer would push you out of the current window.

Why does my phone show Fajr 10 minutes earlier than the mosque?

Almost certainly a calculation method mismatch. Your phone might be set to ISNA (15°), and the mosque to MWL (18°) or Karachi (18°). The Islamic prayer time page lets you switch methods so they match. Pick the method your mosque uses.

What does it mean to "combine" prayers?

In some circumstances (travel, illness, severe weather, or hardship in some opinions), two prayers can be combined and prayed together — Dhuhr with Asr, or Maghrib with Isha. This is permitted in different scopes by different schools; check your local guidance.

Are prayer times the same in winter and summer?

No — they shift dramatically with the seasons. Fajr and Isha shift the most (because they depend on twilight, which is shorter in winter and longer in summer at high latitudes). Can I pray Maghrib before sunset if I'm fasting?

No. Maghrib's window starts strictly at sunset. Breaking fast is also tied to sunset (specifically, the start of Maghrib's window). The traditional practice is to break fast first with a date and water, then pray Maghrib.

What about prayer at the poles where the sun doesn't set for months?

At very high latitudes where one of Fajr or Isha cannot be naturally calculated, fiqh provides several rulings: use the times of the nearest city where calculation works normally, use the times of Mecca, or use a fixed fraction (1/7 of the night) for the relevant interval. Bottom line

Salah is anchored to the sun, not the clock. The five daily prayers shift with sunrise, sunset, the seasons, and your latitude.
